You can find a winning product, build a clean listing and make your first ten sales — and still be stuck, because the money cannot reach you. For sellers based outside the United States, getting paid is the step that quietly stops more businesses than product research ever does.

Marketplaces do not make it obvious. Amazon, eBay, Walmart, Etsy and Shopify Payments each have their own rules about which countries they will pay into and what kind of account they will accept. Pick the wrong one and you will discover the problem after your first payout is already on hold.

This guide covers the three routes sellers actually use, what each one really costs, and which marketplaces accept them.

Route 1: Payoneer

Payoneer gives you receiving accounts in USD, GBP and EUR. The marketplace pays into that receiving account as if it were a local bank, and you withdraw to your own bank at home.

Where it works well. Amazon, eBay, Walmart, Etsy, Fiverr and Upwork all support Payoneer directly, and setup takes days rather than weeks. For a seller in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh or the Philippines it is usually the fastest way to go from zero to receiving money.

What it costs. Expect a withdrawal fee of roughly 2% when converting to your local currency, plus a small annual account fee. On $5,000 a month that is around $100 gone before anything else. Check current rates before you commit, as Payoneer adjusts them.

The catch. Payoneer is a payment service, not a bank. Shopify Payments will not accept it, Stripe will not accept it, and some suppliers refuse it. It gets money out of marketplaces; it does not make you look like a US business.

Route 2: Wise Business

Wise gives you local account details in USD, GBP, EUR and a dozen other currencies, with conversion at the mid-market rate.

Where it works well. Conversion is the cheapest of the three — typically well under 1% instead of Payoneer's 2%. If you are moving real volume, that gap compounds fast. Wise also handles paying overseas suppliers well, which Payoneer does not.

What it costs. A one-off setup fee for account details, then per-conversion fees only. No monthly charge.

The catch. Wise's US account details run through a partner bank, and some marketplaces reject them for payouts even though they look like normal ACH details. Amazon generally accepts Wise; Shopify Payments does not. Always test with a small payout before you route everything through it.

Route 3: A real US bank account through a US LLC

This is the route serious sellers end up on. You register an LLC in a state such as Wyoming or New Mexico, get an EIN from the IRS, and open a genuine US business bank account.

Where it works well. Everywhere. Shopify Payments, Stripe, PayPal Business, Amazon, Walmart and TikTok Shop all treat you as a US business, because you are one. Payout holds and verification requests largely disappear. You also get access to US supplier terms and business credit over time.

What it costs. Formation runs a few hundred dollars, plus an annual state fee and a registered agent. You also take on a filing obligation: a US LLC with foreign ownership must file Form 5472 with the IRS each year, and the penalty for missing it starts at $25,000. This is not a detail to skip.

The catch. It takes four to eight weeks end to end, and it only makes sense once you have real revenue. Below roughly $2,000 a month, the annual cost eats the benefit.

Which one should you pick?

  • Setup time — Payoneer: 2–5 days. Wise: 2–5 days. US LLC: 4–8 weeks.

  • Conversion cost — Payoneer: around 2%. Wise: well under 1%. US bank: standard bank rate.

  • Amazon, eBay, Walmart — Payoneer: yes. Wise: usually. US LLC: yes.

  • Shopify Payments and Stripe — Payoneer: no. Wise: no. US LLC: yes.

  • Paying suppliers — Payoneer: limited. Wise: yes. US LLC: yes.

  • Annual filing burden — Payoneer: none. Wise: none. US LLC: yes, Form 5472.

A simple rule of thumb. Start on Payoneer because it works immediately. Add Wise once you are converting enough that the difference in fees is real money. Move to a US LLC and bank account when you are running a Shopify store, spending on ads, or clearing roughly $3,000 a month — because at that point the payment method stops being a cost question and becomes a growth question.

The mistake almost everyone makes

Sellers set up one payment method, get comfortable, and then a marketplace freezes a payout for verification. With no second route, the business stalls for weeks.

Open your backup account before you need it. Verified accounts sitting idle cost nothing. Scrambling to verify one while $8,000 sits on hold costs a great deal.

Getting help with the setup

Company formation and international banking are the two steps where a small mistake is expensive and slow to undo — a wrong state, a missed EIN step, or a bank that rejects your application and leaves a mark on your file.

Sell Smart eCom handles the whole route for sellers: company formation, EIN, and international bank account setup, so your payouts land where they should from day one. If you are still deciding which marketplace to build on, our e-commerce management team can map the payment route to the platform before you commit.
